The purpose of this study is to inquire into the persuasive method of a memorial to the throne through rhetorical analysis. 〈Kan-Pye-Bi-So〉 is the Sun-Hyo Son(孫舜孝)’s memorial to King Sungjong(成宗) which opposed deposal of a queen. A memorial to the throne which criticized the fault of a king and urged straightforward politics can be regarded as a kind of persuasion text as its goal is persuasion itself. Hence rhetorical analysis investigating persuasion technique can show characteristics of a genre more clearly.
This study is focused on the way of persuasion in the memorial and its contribution to persuasion process. The results are classified into rational persuasion method and sensuous persuasion method. This study shows that 〈Kan-Pye-Bi-So〉 made use of sensuous persuasion which used periphrastic and polite expression, appealed to the king’s emotion, and distinguished writer’s good will and sincerity and rational persuasion which utilized historical cases and the teaching of the saints or the scripture.
