Joy Harjo’s Secret from the Center of the World : The Poetics of Place. The New Studies of English Language & Literature 51 (2012): 183-199. This study, based on the fact that a place holds memories and histories, follows the poetic journey to the secret in Secret from the Center of the World. With the landscape in which the ground is the main character, there are the diverse members living in it. “Spirit of Place” consists of them. The place has the image and the symbol reflecting native American’s traditional idea of time. It explains that a landscape and time reach “flexible eternity” that explains ceaseless transformation and motion. It is important that landscape can be the space for a readable text. Being in the landscape is to listen to “earth story” and the earth plays a roll as a poem of ochre. Secret from the Center of the World’s photos and poems imply the diverse centers of the world and they explain the way of approaching to the world’s secret through the interaction between a place and a mind.
