Shi Ping-mei, one of the famous "5?4" women writers, has not been the object of the historians interested in the modern, contemporary China even though her writings were analysed by many scholars majoring in the Chinese literature since 1980s. As a Korean scholar interested in the Chinese (so called) New Women in the 1920s, I think that Shi Ping-mei was a fierce forerunner of the New Culture Movement in the 1920s China.
Ever since she was a young girl she has deeply been sympathetic with the grievous lives of the surrounding traditional women including her own mother. When the “5?4” New Culture Movement swept her, she made up her mind to give her whole life to the cause of the women liberation.
From thence to her death as an author, women magazine -such as Funuzhoukan(婦女周刊) and Rose Weekly(薔薇周刊)- editor she made all her efforts to enlighten women so as to alleviate the troubles of the traditional Chinese women"s lives. In this respect she was first of all a real warrior for the women liberation.
She struggled for the mental salvation of the whole Chines women and men in the 1920s China. In other words she was a serious and fierce warrior against the whole Chinese tradition to look down upon women rather than an mere pioneering revolutionary author giving her prior concerns to the CCP revolution aiming primarily at the whole people"s socio-economic saving.
