This article aims to expose how Calvin explains the conflict between allegory as a method of interpretation for the Christian identity and the arbitrariness of interpreter, and what this explanation means for Christians today.
I analysed Calvin’s commentary on Gal. 4:24, the only place where Paul used the term "allegory," and I tried to explain how Calvin understood allegory, focusing on Calvin"s definition of the word. According to Calvin, the word has two meanings: the literal meaning and spiritual meaning. I tried to describe how he accepted effectiveness of allegory, so far as he regarded allegory as a type of metaphor. Secondly, I explained how Calvin comprehended "eternal" or "general" sense of the word allegory. Calvin regarded this sense of allegory as the power of Holy Spirit, which influences the reader here and now. Thirdly I showed, how Calvin overcame the conflict between literal sense of the text and the subjective arbitrariness of the interpretor. I made it to discussion, that a universal meaning is alive by existential experience and this conflict is overcome by the power of the Holy Spirit. I hope, Calvin"s view on allegory may guide modern interpreters of allegory.

본 논문은 기독교의 정체성을 마련하기 위한 해석 방법으로서의 알레고리적 해석과 해석과정에서 나타난 해석자의 자의성과의 긴장구조를 칼뱅이 어떻게 이해하고 설명하고 있는지 살펴봄으로써 알레고리적 해석이 지금 현재를 살고 있는 그리스도인에게 주는 의미를 드러내는 것을 그 목적으로 삼는다.
이를 위해서 신약성서 갈라디아서 4장 24절에서 단 한 번 언급된 ‘알레고리’란 단어를 칼뱅이 그의 주석에서 어떻게 이해하고 있는지 살펴봄으로써 그의 알레고리적 개념의 의미를 드러내고자 하였다. 이 과정에서 칼뱅의 문자에 대한 이중의 의미, 즉 문자의 외형적 의미와 문자의 깊은 영적 의미로 이루어진 문자의 이해에 근거하여 알레고리적 해석의 타당성의 근거를 마련하였다는 점을 부각시켰다. 둘째, 알레고리적 해석의 특징이 보편성을 어떻게 담보되는지 그의 주석을 통해서 살펴보았다. 칼뱅은 문자의 영원성 내지는 보편성을 성령을 통해서 지금 이 자리의 독자에게도 영향을 끼칠 수 있는 힘으로 이해하였다. 마지막으로, 칼뱅이 알레고리적 해석의 유효성을 부인하지 않았음에도 불구하고 지속적인 알레고리적 해석의 자의성에 대한 칼뱅의 비판이 지닌 긴장구조를 살펴보았다. 이를 위해서 칼뱅의 알레고리적 해석에 대한 비판이 기록된 주석들을 중심으로 분석하였고, 이를 토대로 그가 알레고리적 해석에서 나타나는 이 갈등 구조를 어떻게 이해하고 극복하고 있는지를 살펴봄으로써 칼뱅은 이 갈등구조를 어떻게 해결하였는지 설명하고자 하였다. 해석자의 자의적 해석을 문자적 의미를 통해서 규제한다는 것이 무슨 의미인지, 즉 이 갈등구조가 실존론적 결단에서 어떻게 해소되고 있는지 나타내고자 하였다.
이로써 칼뱅의 문자적 의미와 해석자의 자의적 해석의 갈등 구조를 실존론적 차원에서 해소하는 칼뱅의 알레고리적 해석의 원칙이 지금 현재의 교회의 강단이 직면한 지나치게 주관적으로 이루어지는 알레고리적 해석에 대한 경종과 더불어 대안이 될 수 있을 것으로 기대해 본다.
