Many studies have emphasized that China"s increasing integration into the world economy has been facilitating greater fragmentation of production across countries in Asia. Despite the important role of China in parts and components trade, most previous researchers have shown China"s components trade with a particular partner or in some specific industries. This paper attempts to give a complete description of China"s parts and components trade.
In order to accomplish the goal, the study systematically separates intermediated goods(parts and components) and final goods from total trade flows and gives a description of pattern and trends of parts and components trade of China for the period 1992-2009. Then it estimates the gravity model augmented with the regional dummy variables to examine the determinants of China"s trade in parts and components and to assess whether China enjoys intense linkages in trade in parts and components with other East Asian countries. , The following summarizes the main findings
First, China"s parts and components trade have increased steadily, paralleling the growing volume of China"s world trade. In 1992, the share of these products accounted for less than 10% of China"s total trade, and then enjoyed a steady share rise till 2006, to peak at 20% point however, there was a remarkably steep fall in 2007, and no significant improvement in the next two years.
Second, the parts and components share in China"s imports level is much higher than the world average level and its dominated export of final goods suggesting that China is playing a major role as a world production center. Also the parts and components share in China"s exports level was far lower than the world level in the early 1990s and have since increased to reach the world average level in 2004. The rapid increase of components exports shows that China has also grown to become the world’s parts and components base.
Third, China participates in the international production network through parts and components in SITC7-- machinery and transport equipment. "Electrical machinery and apparatus (SITC77)" is an absolutely huge and growing sector in parts and components trade, its accounted for 42.1% of parts and components exports and 73.4% of parts and components imports.
Fourth, China"s parts and components trade had a higher degree of region of concentration. Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, China, ASEAN, NAFTA and EU are China"s major trading partners, but the imports side and exports side show different structural characteristics. Comparatively speaking, the parts and components trade with the rest of the world is expanded both exports and imports side. Also the market share for these countries and regions continue to increase.
Finally, China"s trade linkage with East Asian countries in terms of both exports and imports are stronger in parts and components trade than in final goods trade.
