This paper investigates how Korean L2 learners of English process wh-dependencies in English. We conducted an experiment using the event-related potentials (ERP) paradigm. The participants in the experiment read four sentence conditions that manipulate both wh-dependency and its length: short and long wh-dependency along with short and long (declarative) control. ERPs were measured at a critical final verb that assigns a thematic role to the fronted wh-phrase in short and long wh-sentences, and at an intermediate verb in long-distance wh-sentences. In the previous L1 study by Phillips et al. (2005), native speakers elicited P600 effects at the final verb and a sustained anterior negativity (SAN) in short- and long-distance wh-conditions. They also showed N400 effects at the intermediate verb in long-distance wh-condition. In our study, the final verb in short wh-dependency sentences (...which criminal the careful witness would recognize...) elicited both left anterior negativity (LAN) and delayed P600 effects at anterior regions. This shows that Korean learners of English process short-distance wh-dependency markedly differently from L1 speakers. In long wh-dependency sentences (...which criminal the detective hoped the careful witness would recognize...), on the other hand, there was no effect of N400, LAN or P600. Neither the intermediate nor the final verb in this condition elicits any significant ERP effects. This points to the fact that Korean L2 learners have great difficulty in integrating the wh-phrase syntactically with the intermediate or the final verb.
