The objects of this article are analyzing ‘Si Hwa’, Hwang, Sok woo’s poetic theory and understanding the poetry of his early works on the logic of his theory.
In his poetic theory, Hwang argued that the essence of poetry is the severance of relation with everyday language and the resistance to conventional standard is the staring point of the modern poetry. Especially his argument of that the emotion is not the object of control but the object of serious attention. It is estimative advance of the early modern poetry in 1910’s Korea. He argued that poetic words in modern poem must be discovered by attention to inner side of his consciousness not by logical construction.
In his poetic works, he showed remarkable models of ‘靈語 words of soul’ and the process of poetic writing as revelation of ‘靈語’. His early poetry should seems to be abstract on superficial reading but it shows the sensuous formation of the problem of individuation. and the motives of his works are formed from the attention to private emotions and feelings.
In conclusion, Hwang proposed the new concept about modern poetry as the alternative of former poetry such as ‘新體詩’ and he has made remarkable achievements as the advocate of ‘free verse’ in 1910"s Korea.
