The topic of the legend of Tangun was first suggested in Baek Ho-seop’s commentary about the worship of Tangun,s tomb in tomb of clothing and footwear, which deals with Tangun’s grave. Tomb of clothing and footwear is understood to be an acknowledgment of the mistrust surrounding the grave as well as the need for clear proof dealing with the topic from Confucian scholars in Gangdong and Pyeong-an province. This is intended to expand our knowledge base and smooth over differences in our shared understanding about the grave that have brought its discussion to a standstill.
As if by royal edict from King Sunjong himself, this perception grew to form the basis of worshipping Tangun’s tomb. It is known as future generations inherit the Tomb in Danjo-sago as well as tomb of clothing and footwear in Dangungyo-buheung-gyeongryak. Prior to Baek Ho-seop penning his understanding of Tangungrave in tomb of clothing and footwear, one can recognize the same perception in Yi Deok-mu’s description dating from the late Joseon dynasty. This author introduces his work Jeonju-saga-si with a poem audience for Sungin-jeon in which he offers a commentary on this theme including the lines “Tangun’s grave lies in Gangdong county, A pair of shoes was buries there.” On this, however, Yi Deok-mu was in error, and his view has no relation to that in Baek Ho-seop’s tomb of clothing and footwear dating from 1900.
With regard to the period associated with Imgyeong-dae, sandals, and the formation of oral traditions concerning Tangun"s grave, we can take into account Seo Hyeong-su"s opinion in the sense of Gangdong gauleiter, as dealt with in the repair and memorial service of the concept of the grave in 1786(King Jeongjo 10th years). Also during this period, this concept encountered disagreement stemming from the problem of real and fake. During this time, Seo Hyeong-su presented Yeoji-ji by Ryu Hyeong-won based on the credit, but this too was insufficient. It appears Gangdong’s having the honor of being the site of Tangun,s grave rested on whether there was another authority confirming this fact, and thus the original legend was transformed into a new one ; therefore the possibility exists that this legend has more to do with Imgyeong-dae and sandals than anything else, because among the Tangun legends originating in Gangdong, this is the only one about Tangun!s grave. The legend was remarked upon by Baek Ho-seop in order to facilitate the veneration of the grave as a tomb. This expression included in tomb of clothing and footwear combined the meanings of both Tangun worship and the legend of Tangun’s tomb.
