강원도 인제군 상남면 일대의 두 지점에서 금왕단층대의 단층암 분포 및 미구조 특성을 파악하였다. 금왕단층대는 공주단층계의 일부분으로써 심부에서 형성된 단층암이 현재 지표에 노출된 파쇄암대로 구성되어 있는 좌수향 주향이동단층이다. 단층대에는 초파쇄암(ultracataclasite)으로 구성된 단층핵이 존재하며, 모암에서 단층핵으로 갈수록 파쇄미각력암, 원파쇄암, 파쇄암순으로 분포한다. 파쇄암계열의 폭은 약 150-200 m이며, 단층대의 주향방향으로 그 폭이 변화한다. 파쇄암계열의 단층암대가 융기 또는 침식에 의해 깊이 4 km 이내의 지표근처로 올라왔을 때 금왕단층대가 재활동하여 A 지점에는 약 20-30 cm 폭의 단층비지대가 초파쇄암대 내에 형성되었으며, B 지점에는 약 30-40 m 폭의 단층역암대가 편마암과 파쇄암계열의 경계부에 형성되었다. 지표 근처에서 단층비지대 및 단층역암대가 형성될 때 A 지점에는 상반쪽 약 10 m 까지 균열면이 하반쪽보다 훨씬 많이 형성되었으며, B 지점에서는 단층역암대로부터 약 5 m까지 불연속면의 밀도가 높은 단층손상대가 형성되었다. 단층암의 ESR 연대측정에 의하면 연구지역에서 제 4기에 적어도 3번 금왕단층대가 재활동하였다. 특히 약 17만년 전에는 연구지역 전역(약 6 km)에서 금왕단층대가 재활동 한 것으로 추정된다.
