Jang, Seon-Young. The Fantasy for the ‘Savage Masculinity’ in D. H. Lawrence’s Short Stories. The New Studies of English Language & Literature 49 (2011): 153-177. The purpose of this paper is to examine how D. H. Lawrence, in his short stories, tries to rescue the masculinity which has been threatened with the coming of the First World War, through the fantasy for the ‘savage masculinity’. Lawrence’s male project resembles the way Lacan’s subject on the masculine side pursues a ‘phallic jouissance’ in “The Formulas of Sex”. It supports the fantasy structure in which the masculine subject fills in his ontological lack with the fantasy for the complete jouissance which is phallic. However, it reveals the limited understanding about women and their desire that cannot be explicated within the phallus-centered structure. Thus, this paper, tracing how the fantasy for the savage masculinity is portrayed in Lawrence’s short stories, interrogates how it influences on the relationship between men and women and restricts the author’s perspective about women. Lastly, this paper extends the female desire that shows in Lawrence’s short story but insufficiently explained by him, to Lacan’s ‘feminine jouissance’ on the feminine side.
