This article studies the concept of risk management and its goals, the management techniques most often employed by healthcare facilities, the major considerations and procedures involved in creating a risk management system for the facility and the necessity and contents of legal risk management in facilities.
1. For healthcare facilities, risk management means identifying areas of potential liability exposure, avoiding or at least reducing exposure whenever possible, and thus minimizing loss from malpractice litigation.
2. The goals of risk management are to protect the financial assets of the facilities and, if possible, to increase profitability. Of course, it is come to public attention that these efforts is connected with the protection of patients.
3. It is important to identify, control and finance risk for appropriate risk management in healthcare facilities. Since a facility’s risk exposure is at large as its total assets, risk management begins with knowledge of corporate assets. A risk manager must know how the facility functions as well as what it owns. Once the probable nature and extent of the facility’s risk is known insofar as possible, plans can be made for coping with it. Adam p. Sielecki, Jr.’s characterizes a facility’s choices as risk avoidance, loss control, separation of exposures, and transfer of risk to others. Since an enterprise cannot escape most risk generated by its activities, the question becomes how to pay if loss occurs. The facility may choose to bear the cost itself, but it’s advised doing so only when the probability of loss is sufficiently remote etc.
4. There are the form of the program, designing and filling the position of risk manager etc. in techniques of establishing a risk management program. There are incident reporting, other screening methods and analyzing the information in the methods of operating the program.
5. Establishing the legal risk management is asked for risk management system to be settled powerfully in healthcare facilities. The contents of legal risk management in facilities are various according to the procedure and contents of facility’s management.
