The composition of manufacturing capabilities has been one of the controversial issues in manufacturing strategies. Represented by Trade-offs model vs Sand cone model, researchers have examined an appropriate combination of major manufacturing capabilities. Borrowing from Transaction Cost Theory, this study examines the relationship between transaction cost variables, the choice of manufacturing capabilities and firm performance. Specifically, we propose a theoretical fit between asset specificity, uncertainty and the degree of trade-offs in manufacturing capabilities. In addition, we introduce two moderators, long-term relationship and IT investment. The degree of capability centralization is operationalized, using Herfindahl-Hirschman Index(HHI).
Empirical analysis shows that asset specificity has significant impact on the degree of capability centralization while IT investment moderates the relationship between two variables. It partially supports our main research idea that there exists a contingency between transaction cost variables and the choice of manufacturing capabilities.
