The transgression of image in virtual art reflects on the implications of artistic creation, in that it’s activity is incorporated into the possible change of nature. With the aid of digital media, images generate their form by themselves, and through an automated process, ‘file to factory’ brings them into reality. In this context, the image becomes a “habitat” for the imagination. Its generative momentum breaks the dichotomy of image practice - such as form and material, or conception and realization, and artistic creativity expands its realm.
Chance image in historical art literature is a rich source for this generative moment of image. The old masters found various forms in natural objects, and they modelled lusus scientiae on lusus naturae. They treated a strange phenomenon in nature as an object of scientific experimentation and tried to find the universal principle of nature. Virtual Architecture follows this tradition of participation in the productive process of nature.
The architects - such as Greg Lynn, Herzog & De Meuron, Kas Oosterhuis generate the form of architecture de facto by means of the activity of force in the force field. The close relationship between the activity of physical force and the morphological transformation, which D’arcy W. Thompson thematized in the forms of organism, is actualized by them as a determinant for the activity of forms. Like a morphological variation in the everchanging nature, the architectural form emerges from the interaction between natural force and character of material. The emergence of form in virtual architecture is closely linked to the performative capacity of image and the realization of its vitality.
