A new experimental approach, herein referred to as modified transfer matrix method, for evaluating normal incidence sound transmission loss of solid multilayer materials is presented. Acoustical materials’ original transfer matrices were measured by using standing wave tube method, and then they were designed in order to predict multilayer materials’ acoustical properties. In order to remove some useless information, the transfer matrices were modified with the aid of the mass law effect which was considered to exist in solid materials. The simplicity and feasibility of the method is validated with several examples. This method can be applied in designing multilayer sound insulation materials which are widely used in automotive engineering, building acoustics and so on.
