It’s Garam Yi Byeong-Ki that presented the modern aesthetic consciousness on sijo in earnest with systematized logic. Since then, Korean sijo has been said to start research on modern aesthetic consciousness. Garam presented 〈Let’s reform sijo〉, noticeable theory on sijo, in 1932. It suggests a variety of methods to reform sijo. The reformation is related with methods to modernize sijo, which can be called modernity of sijo. The modernity doesn’t mean just modern time as specific era, but normative direction defining specific era as a significant one. In this regard there should be regular normative direction for modernity of sijo. After modern times sijo needs normative direction defining this time as a specific era to get modernity. The normative direction isn’t decided by an individual dogma, but appropriateness of the times and universal validity satisfying majority. If a poet or a poem is said not to fill the modernity, it is caused by this context. It is not different for Garam to suggest various methods for modernizing sijo in 〈Let’s reform sijo〉. Although his suggestion has much to be desired as universal and satisfying object, it is much significant as a concrete method tried almost for the first time to modernize Korean sijo.
