There was a new homiletical paradigm shift in the second half of the 20th century in the Christian church. The so called the New Homiletics Movement, which occurred in North America in the 1970’s, changed the form and method of traditional preaching.
At that time, traditional preaching did not cope with the rapidly changing situations appropriately and showed its limitations in the field of preaching. The old forms of Christian preaching are no longer effective and heard by people.
In this situation many homiletical scholars and preachers in North America tried to look for a way to overcome the limitations of the traditional preaching, finally suggesting the new paradigm of preaching.
Fred B. Craddock was one of the leading figures in contemporary Christian preaching and is a remarkable homiletician. He changed the homiletical paradigm and renewed it for the twentieth-century. He really opened the door of the New Homiletics Movement and changed completely the practice of Christian preaching toward a new direction.
Especially, he presented an inductive method of preaching as a new paradigm in contemporary preaching, emphasizing the importance of the imagination in preaching, making us see and respect the listener as a partner of preaching.
I think it is a very important thing that we understand his theory and methodology of preaching. Therefore, this article explores the homiletical theory and methodology of Fred B. Carddock and seeks some answers for the present homiletical situation through him.
