This study is conducted to look into the directivity of sound in Kim Jong-sam’s poem. Such a viewpoint of work analysis is meaningful in that it aims at being out of the previously expected methodology and seeks for diversity of work analysis through acoustic abundant world, ‘sound as a meaning’.
Kim Jong-sam is a very important person to explain the development process of Korean poetry around the 1950s and the trend of modernism poetry. In particular, a poet’s inquiry for sound is a critical clue to examine his poetry world. To Kim Jong-sam, a poet is a listener before a view. In addition, a poet is a person who averts his eyes from a useless glimmer with a full of fake and listens to ‘a call of existence’ hearing from somewhere.
This study divides the directivity of sound in Kim Jong-sam’s poem largely into ‘hearing of sound’, ‘discord of sound’, and ‘harmony of sound’. Firstly, it means inner exploration, and what Kim Jong-sam captures is latent guilt inside a poet. Next, discord of sound can be a medium to form a poet’s tragic perception. The sound is always contrary to sound that a poet tries to pursue, and it is formed as a factor expanding tragedy. Lastly, harmony of sound serves as a factor that helps him endures a tragic reality. To him, music is a power to help him endure an absurd reality as well as a breakthrough to seek for salvation.
