This essay deals with the two movies: the Oliver Hirschbiegel’s German film Das Experiment(2001) and the Paul Scheuring’s American film remake The Experiment(2010). And on the basis of these films, it tries to show the differences of the two cultures: the German culture and the American culture.
At first, to compare the two cultures. this essay takes theculture theory of the Netherlandish sociologist Geert Hofstede. His theory develops itself under the perspective of four categories: power distance, collectivism vs. individualism, masculinity vs. femininity, and uncertainty avoidance vs. acceptance. The results of my research say that the two movies show the similar results and the similar differences corresponding to the outcomes of Hofstede’s research. Consequently, we can see that for the German film it is mush lower in the power distance index than for the American film, that the former, however, shows more collective and masculine traits than the other, and that for the former it is higher in the uncertainty avoidance index than for the other.
In addition, this essay analysed the shots of the films and made the themes and the formal traits of them clear. As for the theme, the German film expresses the situationalism and the American film the theory of the Human Nature. Finally, as for the film form, the former has been composed of mainly the Time-Images and the other of the Movement-Images. Through these results, it can be also said that the two films display the certain cultural differences of the two nations.
