The majority of the reader-group of the 1 Peter were consisted of slaves who were serving the powerful rulers and masters, and wives who married non-Christian husbands. Because of their conversion to the Christianity, whose values and thoughts were different from the social common norms, they were under the persecution, especially the social persecution, namely, accusing(2:12, 3:16), ignorant talk(2:15), insult(4:14), etc.
To encourage such readers Peter advised them, as disciples of Jesus Christ to overcome their difficulties in the daily life, furthermore to change the society with the higher Christian values.
As the strategy to cope with the daily difficulties, Peter proposed to apply the current ‘household code’ of the society to Christian ethics. It could give them the identity as a member of God’s Family, by which they could bear their sufferings and overcome their depressed situation.
With this new identity they could endure every persecution and bless people who persecute them rather than complain it. It is the principle of Christ(“the Passion of Christ”) who had showed already the example in his sufferings at the Cross(1 Peter 2:23). His disciples should follow this model of Christ, and by doing it they could open an opportunity to change the whole society.
