This paper examines the exhibitions held in Britain, in commemoration of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade in 2007. The exhibitions have been made possible, as the outcome of recognition politics in favor of Africa-Caribbean community. But the paper goes on to argue that it poses challenges in terms of the reconstruction of new multicultural identity in Britain. The slavery has fallen into collective oblivion in Britain for the last 200 years. As if to break out of the oblivion, a flood of commemorative events have been held, with the museum exhibitions taking the center stage. Amongst more than 60 exhibitions, I put focus on the exhibition called The Breaking the Chains: The Fight to End Slavery at the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum in Bristol. At the same time, the International Slavery Museum has been just opened in Liverpool, as part of the commemoration efforts. To cite the concept of “museum as a contact zone” by James Clifford, I analyze the relationship, not only between the objects and the audiences, but also between the curators and the community representatives. The community consultation, an important function of “the contact zone”, has not been enough to incorporate all the needs of ‘black’ Britons. It is true that the 2007 bicentenary exhibitions, at least, served to provide an opportunity of recognition to Africa-Caribbean community. And from the responses of the audiences, it is thought that they failed to provide new understanding of the slavery. In conclusion, I argue that the exhibition has come short of reaching understanding the legacy of slavery, not to speak of producing a new meta-narrative of slavery.
