This study is to reconsider the meaning of Lee Hyo-Seok's whole texts in the perspective of aesthetic idealism. The purpose of this article is to clarify how to bridge the gap between his early works and late works. Lee Hyo-seok's literary works show much interest in new media, new products, classical music and overseas trip. He reveals class consciousness toward the capitalistic system and he offered Korean people trenchant criticism on civilization. However, he could not conceal his own captivation of western civilization. In his novel Byeokgongmuhan, the protagonist named Il-ma won the lottery in Manchuria. Il-ma could finally be married to Russian woman and he could attain his long-cherished desire to invite famous orchestra to Korea. Byeokgongmuhan, shows Lee Hyo-seok's aesthetic idealism to the utmost limit. Il-ma dreamed of perfect coincidence between his aesthetic ideal and everyday lives through his marriage to western woman.
Lee Hyo-seok was also interested in writing poems. In his early poems, he shows his aesthetic idealism in more honest and uncluttered expression. In addition, he regarded making mysterious atmosphere as important factor to complete his own works. His characters and spaces seem to be enveloped in dense fog. His ideal villages were so shrouded in mist that readers of his books could not easily clarify the accurate meaning of his ideal spaces and characters. The characters and spaces he made were extraordinarily beautiful because they were not accessible or available.
After he moved to Hambuk, he started writing on indigenous themes. His indigenous themes were intended not to return to his native place but to recreate old local places to new hiding places for urbanite city people. The countrysides he had depicted in his own novels were modern places which were rediscovered by a modern writer. Lee Hyo-seok's literary works were continuously focusing on his own aesthetic idealism which was inclined to western art and modern perspective. His aesthetic idealism included both occidentalism of Asian and orientalism of westernized Asian.
