The early works of Rem Koolhaas from the 1980s, then working under the spirit of 'New Sobriety,' openly made references to famous works of Modern Architecture. This research looks into this curious period of the Dutch architect, focusing on Villa Dall'Ava (1984-91) and Kunsthal (1989-92), designed and built in a similar period and both having direct references to Villa Savoye. A formal analysis on these works, focusing on their differences as well as similarities, reveals that they were more than simple homage or tribute to Modern Architecture: whereas Villa Dall'Ava was concerned with subverting the elements and principles of Modern Architecture as exemplified in Le Corbusier's early iconic masterpiece, ultimately negating the Modern idea of totality or order, Kunsthal accepted the premises of Villa Savoye and overcame it by furthering them to their logical extreme, aiming for a collision between pure programs (a continuous interest for Koolhaas since Delirious New York [1978]) rather than formal conflicts.
