This study tris to connect Deleuzian analysis on paintings with architectural drawings by Rem Koolhaas, and the agency of this connection is an sectional diagram for a Seattle Public Library project. The study points our three levels of ‘isolation’ in the Koolhaas’ drawing, which is one of the core ideas of Deleuzian criticism on Bacon’s paintings. The first and the most fundamental idea is the isolation of the drawing itself. The drawing establishes itself as an independent image by isolating itself not only from architectural conditions and demands, but also from the design process for the project. In such a drawing, there are the isolation of the ‘figure’ and of ‘elements’. The elements, which are ‘boxes’ in the drawing, are not parts of the ‘whole’, but independent entities with their own identities. The elements do not ’organize’ the figure, but ’compose’ it. The figure, which is presented by irregular ‘contour’, also isolates itself from the material structure, the space around it. However, all those isolation always happens together with ‘embracement’, and it is the paradox which this study critically argues. Only with this embracement, the isolation can keep happening without being absolutely assimilated into the structure, the ‘code’. In the Koolhaas’ drawing, the figure is a ‘body’ alive, and a building is built in a piece of paper.
