This study examined the effects of schema-frame congruence on news audience's acceptance of media frame. Most studies on framing effects have focused on concept availability and applicability to explain how media frame affects the audience's interpretation. Individual schema that pre-exists before media exposure has rarely been examined. This experimental study manipulated three stories about female workers' protests into two differently framed news articles such as 'gender discrimination' and 'labor repression.' Two different university student groups such as South Korean and North Korean refugees read the given stimulus articles and answered how they interpreted them. As a result, South Korean students who have less labor-related schema showed stronger framing effects than North Korean did. This implies that the audience members who are exposed to news frame incongruent with their schema tend to show higher arousal and spend more cognitive efforts in order to assimilate the given news frames into their schema structure. Thus, schema-frame incongruence can result in stronger framing effects than schema-frame congruence. This study suggests that schema-frame congruence should be considered as a part of framing effect mechanism.
