The purpose of this study was to identify the factors related to self-management of the elderly patients with Diabetes Mellitus and to provide data for developing nursing intervention programs for self-management. The subjects of this study were 150 old people with diabetes mellitus in a community dwelling. The data were collected by structured questionnaire from June 1 to August 30, 2010. The data were analyzed for descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression by using SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. The mean of family support, cognitive function, depression and self-management were 55.52, 6.69, 20.89, and 54.98 scores. There were significant differences in the mean of self-management according to education, economic status and complication. Self-management had moderately positive correlation with family support and cognitive function and moderately negative correlation with depression. Among the factors related to self-management of the subjects, family support had highest explanatory power of 48.4% and then followed cognitive function and depression in the order. They explained 54.2% of the self-managemen of the subjects. In conclusion, the factors related to self-management of the elderly with DM patients in a community-dwelling were family support, cognitive function and depression. Therefore, the findings of this study will provide practical guidelines for developing self-management interventions.
