This article aims to examine the concept of ‘the memory’. This concept appeared in the historiographical discourse because of the discord between the history and the memory, and between the official history and the unofficial history. It seems that the history has no authority over the memory. Especially, the reason why the discourse of the memory dominates in recent years is the increased interests in the study of “how was it really” of the Holocaust, which incites in its turn to study “how was it really memorized”. In Korea, ‘the purification of the past’ played the same role.
The full bloom of the discourse of the memory in the Les Lieux de memoire reflects not only the inherent relation between the history and the memory, but the fact that France lost the honor of the leading country of the History. It is thus necessary to establish the identity of France by means of the memory inspiring the honor of the nation. So, Les lieux de memoire is a national history of France. In the historiographical dimension, this collective book can be estimated as a return to the national history which was disfavored by the social history.
In fact, Les lieux de memoire are not the places of the memory but those of the history. For example, what we can hear in such a place of memory as Jean d’Arc is neither the sacred voice, nor the popular memory, but the history reconstructed through the critical examination of the source, that is the memory. Despite of the title, the book edited by Pierre Nora doesn’t give the predominance to the memory. It doesn’t insist that the memory is more pure and nearer to the fact than the history. The discourse that the memory is true is no other than a myth. The history can’t be replaced by the memory.
