The purpose of this thesis is to represent the works of Rebecca Horn(1944- ) as both post-modernism art and feminist art. She not only practiced various art genres such as body-sculptures, performances, kinetic sculptures and installations but also tried to expand the field of art by introducing the elements like a movie, literature and alchemy. In this aspect, her works are post-modernism art. However, in spite of using various genres and materials, her works represent the woman’s body in common and communicate the other’s narrative. This is why her works are considered as feminist art.
‘Ecriture feminine’ is introduced as a methodology to support my opinion that Horn’s works represent the female body. In ecriture feminine, otherness is considered as an alternative of female emancipation and as new possibility for women. If ecriture feminine is a try to form new relation between the subject and the other, Horn’s works representing the female desire of form an intimacy with others are the visual text of ecriture feminine.
In her installation works after the mid 1980s, a feminine space is important because it comprises the others’ narratives. In her works, a space is the interior of the female body, where one can hear both the other woman and the historical other’s narratives.
The concept of the other is the theme with that post-modernism and feminism deal in common. Horn’s works are post-modernism art in that they expand the field of art and communicate the other’s narrative. On the other hand, they are feminist art in that they represent the other woman by transforming the elements considered as a male field into feminine words.
One can find this thesis unique and different from previous studies on Horn in that it attempts to analyze Horn’s works from a new approach that her works are post-modernism art and feminist art. And through ecriture feminine, to assert that Horn’s works are interrelated is another significance of this thesis.
