This paper examines how China's accession to the WTO has impacted on its environment. In this paper, we consider 3 different types (SO2, waste water, solid waste) of environmental quality. We find that China's entry to the WTO has produced mixed impacts on its environment. The entry itself induces the rise of trade and FDI and in return deteriorates its environment. However, the entry that raises trade volume and FDI amounts has shifted the industry composition more to tertiary industries that lowers environmental pollution as a result. It also gives a rise of FDI which increases overall environmental pollution level but lowers pollution in the Eastern region. This implies the quality differentiation of FOI for different region with respect to its environment. The entry to the WTO generated some mixed impacts for different types of pollution. For example the entry to the WTO does not affect solid waste produced but it tends to invite more of S02 and waste water pollution. Even though China's entry to the WTO deteriorates its environmental quality in the short run, the entry may turn out to an environment friendly policy in the long run by the logic of environmental Kuznets Curve.
