Carl Gustav Jung(1875-1961), the founder of analytic psychology, was aware of the limit of Western rationalism. In order to overcome the limitations, he studied in depth Western traditional thoughts as well as Eastern traditional thoughts. Concerning Eastern ideas, he took a mid-way between two extremes: he did not ignore the importance of the Eastern wisdom, neither did he turn his back on Western science, carried away by Eastern occultism. According to Jung, Westerners should be stimulated by the East to stand on their own bottom, not expecting any spiritual handouts. “Synchronicity” is an important term of Jung which he developed by combining his own psychological research with Eastern-Western traditional thoughts. The principle of synchronicity is an attempt to overcome the limit of rationalism, to show the wholeness of spirit and matter. He insists that there were pioneers of the idea of synchronicity. Although the principle of causality dominated the natural sciences in the 18th and 19th centuries, the ideas which correspond to the principle of synchronicity were still alive in mysticism and literature. The “principle of heaven and man corresponding to each other 天人感應” suggested by Chinese is a thought which existed in all ages and cultures. The claims that diverge from a rational causality were oppressed by the Western mainstream. Mysticism and literature performed a role of providing a hideout for the nonmainstream.
