This paper explores the link between the reperspectivizing role of headlines in translated news magazine articles and the institutional translational context in which translation is carried out. Based on the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework and drawing on the concept of institutional translation, the study examines how North Korea is discursively constructed in the headlines of 77 Newsweek Korea magazine articles, in comparison to the corresponding 77 English language headlines of the source articles in Newsweek. The analysis suggests that discursive strategies such as agentivization, explicitation, shifts in naming/referring, predication, speech act, and speech representation are utilized cumulatively in the headlines of translated texts to alleviate, transform, bleach and silence discourses that portray North Korea as the belligerent Other. Of special importance is the addition of words that either belong to the lexical repertoire designed to describe "reconciliation"/"reunification" or "North Korea as unfortunate brethren." The findings suggest that headline writing is an arena in which ideologies and voices are contested.
