The national asset management of civil infrastructure requires well organized information systems to assist interdisciplinary professions from engineering perspective to policy perspective. This paper provides a framework of information backbone for. IT-based national asset management of civil infrastructure. The information backbone is composed of three axes for identifying national assets, data levels and life-cycle phases of civil infrastructure. The functions of the each axis and useful tools for integrated operation of distributed information along the each axis are addressed. In addition, two major experiences, 3-D shape based road information modeling and integrated operation of 3-D bridge model with structural analysis information, are demonstrated. Extended product data models based on STEP and IFC are used to build the 3-D based digital information model of road, tunnel and bridge in this study.
