Existed from the former Soviet period, the Uzbekistan mahalla in both traditional and contemporary identity political terms has been institutionalized. The mahalla, indeed, was an administrative unit, one that referred to an indigenous institution, in which the so-called neighborhood community is found. Since its inception, the mahalla has functioned as an intermediary between local society and the state; however, the majority of scholars of political science are explicitly skeptical of its cultural and traditional potentials, to which this study sheds a new light in its great details. The primary purpose of this paper, then, is to examine first the traditional and at some point conventional features of the mahalla, and thereby exploring its new dimensions such as its spatial forms, architectural structure, symbolic and religious connotations, and other unexplored problems so far. To this end, this paper relies heavily upon a couple of figures, images, and interdisciplinary information associated with the mahalla under discussion. Consequently, the focal points this study is mainly concerned with is not saying that the mahalla is an organ of social control from the Uzbekistan government. Rather, it should be underscored that the institution is not just an indicator of transformation which the post-Soviet Uzbekistan society has faced, but a microcosmic world that stands for the Uzbekistans’ daily life, way of behaviors, self-image, tradition, and even personal histories both in public and private space.
