This paper deals with the role of myth and memories in the nationalization of the city Heidelberg after the period of German Romanticism. It is evident that a myth does not evolve from the nature of a thing, and that it is never eternal, rather, it has a specific historical foundation and transformation. The case of "Heidelberg myth" illustrates that the representation of the city Heidelberg as a "typical" German city was developed during three predominantly nationalistic phases of German history: 1) foundation of myth during the German Romanticism, 2) intensification of myth during the period of national movement, 3) taint of myth by the racism in the age of Nazis. In this ongoing process the city Heidelberg had to be prepared for its duties of representation as a "typical" German city.
The next chapter focuses on the change of myth and memories caused by the transnational transfer, especially through the spreading of "The Student Prince" as a musical and cinema. Myth and memory is history in ceaseless transformation and reconstruction, and the image of the past is continuously reconsidered in the light of an ever-changing present and its place. The case of "The Student Prince" shows that the circulation of these memories, the increasing local and regional contexts as well as changes and adoptions by Japanese led to a creation of a transnational area of remembrance. So this paper reveals that the memories attached to the topics have a spatial reference, but this reference is either entirely national or transnational.
