As a biographical study of D. H. Lawrence’s life and work in the crisis of the First World War, this essay aims at placing Lawrence in the political and cultural context of the period. Through reading The Rainbow, Women in Love, and Kangaroo along with biographical literature on Lawrence and other figures concerned, the present essay examines the spy scandal and jingoist fervor, suppression on his work, social isolation, and loss of audience. The affliction Lawrence suffered was, to a great degree, attributed to his marriage to a German woman and his indiscretion, which turned many of his acquaintances against him not to mention the British authorities. This made him vulnerable to a witch hunt. He refused to support the chauvinist hysteria rampant in England and distanced himself from the pacifist movement as well. As a maverick intellectual, he did not believe the grand rhetoric of war propaganda, and criticized the sham slogans of love of humanity, the war to defend the free world and end all wars. For him such myths were just an excuse for the worship of power and interests. The experience of the wartime agony and victimization shifted the direction of his life in a serious way. The traumatic memory left its mark on his subsequent work such as Aaron’s Rod, Kangaroo, The Plumed Serpent, and Lady Chatterley’s Lover, which were replete with bitterness against his native culture and society.
