This study is a test on Reckless's containment theory. Recently, his concept of positive self-concept has tested through the concept of self-esteem, in order to escape from the problem of tautological problem. So, this study tests on effects of self-esteem on juvenile delinquencies in the sample of middle-school students(N=3,449), controlling the various variables; i.e. the provocative factor such as a poor income, a strain from poor resident environment, and a differential association with delinquent peer, the control variables such as a attachment on parents, a goal-attainment propensity, a parental control on juvenile, and a neighborhood control.
The results of the analysis on this data show that the positive self-concepts of juveniles have a persistent significant effects on juvenile delinquency, with the significant effects of various covariates such as the number of delinquent peer, the non-own house, the parental controls, and etc. Finally, this study finds full empirical support for Reckless and his associates' containment theory.
