From the European classic literature to the contemporary world-wide literary section, the character Don Juan has been mythologized in the same scale with Shakespeare's Hamlet or Cervantes' Don Quijote. As most critics agree, this mythologization of Don Juan had started from the Spanish baroque dramatist, Tirso de Molina's El Burlador de Sevilla y Convidado de Piedra. This article is to investigate other probabilities to this process of Don Juan's mythologization.
The story of Don Juan consists two separate motives: Don Juan's dissipated action to four class-differentiated women and the stone- and statue's invitation to punishment-death dinner. These mythologic and legendary motives appeared in Tirso's work before and had been circulated independently with that. His dramas have been traditionally estimated to be positioned between Lope de Vega's national drama and Calderon de la Barca's conceptual drama, being characterized by palace's intimated incidents, deep psychological expressions to women characters, and symbolic and rhythmic dialogues.
Contrary to this kind of traditional estimations to Tirso's works, in El Burlador de Sevilla y Convidado de Piedra, we meet with the narrative simplicity which develops into nearly the same action pattern (attraction - possession - fleeing) that is repeated along with his other works. It leads us to conclusion that the author didn't have personal desire of creativity, and he just tried to combine the existing mythologic discourses. Otherwise, according to the recent researches on our suggestion, we can recognize that the mythologization on Don Juan had not started from Tirso's so famous work but is the result of various non-literary elements.
