William Morris was not only a poet and artist and a designer of various applied arts but also a revolutionary socialist. About 10 years in his later life he dedicated himself wholly to the construction of socialist theory and practice. News from Nowhere was a literary result of his most ardent search for an ideal communist society. In his utopian romance he tried to draw a picture of utopian society which could be attained when communist society is fully realized, long after the bloody revolution by the working class.
One of the attempts of this study is to examine the communist society as an alternative society to the late 19th century social system of capitalism and class division. It tries to discuss how communist society is achieved and what are the characteristics of the communist society of equality and liberty are, that is, the cooperative harmony between community society and individualism and also the pleasure and happiness people find in their work.
This thesis also attempts to discuss anarchism as the novel's second important political philosophy displayed in his construction of ideal society. In a matured communist society, people have developed a intensely self-regulated lives, so there is no system of law, government, and even education. Morris's anarchism is closely linked with an arcadian society where people live innocent lives of highly inner ethics and where people live harmoniously with the cycle of Nature.
