One of the earliest documents m the Romanian language that has survived down to our own days is the letter written m 1521 by boyar Neac?u in order to inform him about an imminent Turkish attack "?nv???turile lui Neagoe Basarab c?tre fiul s?u Teodosie" is a capital work of the Renaissance in Eastern Europe, in pages of rareartistic expressiveness,it synthetizes the rich and fruitful confluence between Greek-Latin classicism and the Romanian folk spirituality
It was in the same 16th century that Maramure?, a North-Western province of Romania, saw the Roamnian tranlations of some religious texts Most probably under the influence of the Reformation, people must have started realizing that mass must be read in the language ofthe native population
The emergence of national historiography in the form of chronicles and annals, the vast number of translations and adaptations from the European and the Oriental literatures, and the development of education in the Romanian languages formed the major features of cultural life in the 17th and 18th centuries Books of history including expressive portraits, descriptions or historical evocations, asserting and substantiating the Romanian people's Latin origin, the contunuity and unity of their development in this part of the world-mainly the chronicles of Grigore Ureche, Miron Costin, Ion Neculce
The most outstanding of the whole series of Moldavian chroniclers became Dimitrie Cantemir It is perfectly obvious that both his chronicle and Moldavia's description were born out of his boundless love for his homeland and people, whose agitated history hewanted to make known to the entire world Imbued with truth, solidly grounded on scientific arguments, Cantemir's work has been one of the most valuable sources for an acquintance with various facets of Romanians' entity
A particulary important moment in the evolution of Roamnian culture was marked by ?coala Ardelean? a political and cultural movement of the Enlightenment type, illustrated particulary by such scholars as Samuil Micu-Klein, Gheorge ?incai, etc They gathered scientific arguments and documents in order to prove the organic links between the Romanian people's history and culture and the ancient Latin trunk out of which they had branched Their efforts consisted mainly in reviving the consciousness of the nation's nobility m order to revigorate national pride.
