The Tang Dynasty(618-907). generally known as the golden age of Chinese poetry, partially resolved the conflicts that had arisen during the Six Dynasty(六朝), concerning the nature and purpose of poetry. During the first hundred years of the Tang. the Six Dynasties poetic style lingered on and underwent a slow process of adapting to a new social conditions and absorbing foreign influences which came from the military expansions of the seventh century. Cui Rong(崔融 653-706) was born in the mid to early 6S0s and passed the ba-ke examination in 676. Little known of Cui Rong's poetic character. except that he was known together with Li Qiao(李嶠), Du Shen Yen(杜審言). and Su Wei Dao(蘇味道) as one of the Four Friends of Literature(文章四友). He had several relations with famous poets, for example. Chen Zi Ang(陳子昻) and Sung Zhi Wen(蘇味道) etc. His poetry also has special characters of respectfully following the rhymes(奉和), landscapes(景物), and grief(哀悼). If anything sets Cui Rong's poetry apart from his court poetry, it is a heightening of the tendency toward simplicity, already apparent in contrasting his work with those of other court poets. He retains much that is good in court poetry, the syntactic complexity and careful choice of words. One of the best poem is the 「To my wife from theater of war(寒北寄內)」;
旅魂驚塞北, 歸望斷河西.
春風着可寄, 暫爲?蘭閏.
My wandering soul, surprised at north theater of war.
Though I really want to go home, but Ho-xi cuts my hope.
If I can send my letter to her by spring wind,
Possibly the flower fragrance stays around her room.
