Akudagawa's haiku-poems show that he had sought for a harmony of emotional elements of the West and the East. In his essay, "Hokku Shiken" Akudagawa expressed his favor of Japan's traditional principles in haiku-poem making. He argued for haiku's long-time rule of a verse form consisting three metrical units of 5. 7, and syllables. He usually called haiku as hokku (literally meaning the starting verse). which shows how much he valued japan's traditional form of poetry. At the same time. he tried to employ the Western style of emotional description- the reason why some commentators bracket Akudagawa as an art-first writers.
However. Akudagawa had actually pursued for "something beyond" the combined work of Western-Eastern element combination- what he dubbed as the essence of art that touches off deep emotions from the heart of the readers. He maintains with the idea that such emotions can be triggered by the traditional sentiments of japan, not just by foreign, exonerate emotions. That is why Akudagawa graphically described scenic nature of japan in his poems, just like picturing the scene. In this context. Akudagawa's haiku-poem is believed to have an influence of Hototogis school initiated by Shiki Masaoka, who is the flag-bearer of objective descriptions in the nature of poem-making. In a sense. emotions that Akudagawa showed in his haiku-poems can be said to be rather complex and bizarre.
