Ya?ar Kemal is an universal writer who represents Turkey. Kemal, who has been constantly working despite of his age, is famous not only as a writer but also as a person who drew the world's attention to the human right problems of Kurds in Turkey.
Ya?ar Kemal has vividly and delicately depicted the miserable reality of Turkish rural life as well as infringement of human rights that the tenants encounter in his own works that have been announced so far. The main code of Skinny Memed is rebellion of the farmers who are estranged in Turkish society, and who think that existing political and social systems are depressive, and of the bandits who rescue the farmers. And there also are problems about various social discords in Turkey. Ya?ar Kemal vividly and delicately describes that Memed, the hero, goes into the mountains to resist against arrogance and oppression of the landowners who treat poor farmers badly, recovers the farmers' land, and changes into a social reformist.
The Novel Skinny Memed can be called as a representative work that reflects the writer's ideology to look for the methods of fair dividing of wealth. The writer depicts the heroic life of Memed, where he recovers the land of the farmers by resisting against the landowners, and he gradually changes into a social reformist and finally become a revolutionist. The reason why the writer set up the hero as an idealistic revolutionist is because of the writer's intention to talk about the political and social problems in Turkish rural society of the time. Finally, this novel deals with rebellion as affirmation of human dignity, that is a human being cannot be ruled by another human being and a human being is dignified in himself.
Who is the minority in novel Skinny Memed and who is the majority? The landowners who have powerful economic strength when taken numerically are the minority, and the powerless tenant farmers must be the majority. However, the minority are the tenant farmers if taken in the aspect of power and the majority are the landowners. In novel Skinny Memed Memed, the hero, shows the constant resist against the majority through the life of the minority by speaking for the minority who are exploited. It may be because the writer himself is one of the minority, whose circumstances are poor, that the writer has been depicted the irrational society in his works until today when he is over 80 years old. In this meaning his life is his work and his work is his life. Therefore, as he said at an interview, 'Human being is being that can not but resist and Kemal is the spokesman of the poor people and he is the person who realizes his ideology by melting it in his works.
