Purpose : The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning of the experience of family with mentally retarded children. Methods : People who participate in this study were seven. They were parents and normal siblings of the mentally retarded students who attend special schools and normal high school in D city. The period for collecting materials was from September 2005 to December 2006. The phenomenological analysis method suggested by Giorgi was used. Results : 1. The focal meanings of the experience of mentally retarded children's mother were (1) feeling of frustration of the delayed treatment (2) having a hard time admitting her child's retardation (3) having eyes centered on her child (4) feeling burdened by her duty to take care of her child alone (5) emptying her mind (6) feeling thankful for her other normal children (7) being grateful for family's consideration (8) achieving an ability to respond (9) feeling hopeless for the future (10) expectation of the nation's welfare system 2. The focal meanings of the experience of mentally retarded children's father were (1) face to wife´s conflict (2) admitting his mentally retarded child (3) doing his best for children's early education (4) realizing his ability to deal with the situation (5) trying to unite his family (6) expecting a normal son for the future (7) feeling relieved to see his other normal, bright children (8) paving the way for his retarded child. 3. The focal meanings of the experience of mentally retarded children's normal siblings were (1) not wanting to let others know about their retarded brother or sister (2) having difficulties due to retarded siblings (3) feeling hurt with family's indifference toward them (4) having intentional indifference about the knowledge of mental retardation (5) feeling pressured (6) finding out their mother's distress (7) having struggles with their mother (8) personality matured due to retarded siblings (9) getting to know the difficulties of retarded students' school life. Conclusions : All the programs for the mentally retarded children should be done for their entire life. Furthermore, it is necessary to offer family-oriented nursing intervention, considering the characteristics of mother, father and normal siblings.
