The purpose of this paper is to analyze the question about the necessity of collective violence and the inevitability of individual sacrifice in the process of historical revolution.
『Mauser』 is a judicial case in which a discussion is held between the collective chorus as the role of judge and the protagonist Mauser A as a convict. This drama begins with a pronouncement by the chorus on the accused A who worked as a executioner by the order of chorus and ends with his own execution. The span of the intervening time can be understood as a space of the personal experience and cognition of Mauser A. He begins his work with the elimination of his predecessor B. Therefore A and B are the only members of the chain of executioners-victims. A makes the mistake of murdering instead of killing. Finally he found that his victims are more than animals and matter, and begins to see them as human beings. That is why he becomes doubtful about the meaning of revolution.
There is the fault of A in that he tries to throw off the load of (pre)history through murdering, and the fault of the chorus lies in that the chorus wants to clear up the bloody trace of history with the execution of Mauser A. The chorus requires A to agree with his own execution. He refuses at first, but at last gives the command to fire. This contradictory death of A contains not only a protest which culminates in the question, who could take whom to court in this drama, but also the unanswered question whether the sacrifice of the individual by the violence of the collective is inevitable in the process of history. Heiner Muller gives indirect answers to this question as he emphasizes the individual life as the absolute. This is the basis of his humanism
Heiner Muller gives a new meaning to violence and death according to his aesthetic principle of effect. Protagonists experience fear through violence, and this fear forces them to find the reason and the solution. In this way fear and violence become a productive function for the new beginning. As with fear and violence, death becomes the meanning of somethig constructive, because they are in the literature Mullers metaphor for the creative Strength which destroys some of the old and brings as a result of that some of the new. Therefore 『Mauser』 belongs to a production drama of cruel dialectic. At the same time it is also a educational play about the dialectic of enlightment, because 『Mauser』 as a sketch of history criticizes the political situation of DDR (German Democratic Republic) at that time and gives a corrct reflection on the hisorical process.
