In the 20th century, Korean underwent several sad and painful experiences: such as its colonization by Japanese imperialism, the division of the Korean peninsula, the Korean war etc. One of the agendas that Korea has put is that of 'economic growth'. This was needed for the modernization of the Joseon dynasty in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They also regarded it as the method of achieving independence from Japan in the colonial period from 1910 to 1945. South Korea and its people have striven to develop their economy and democracy from 1945 to the present. This aim of the Koreans has been accomplished to some extent. The scale of the Korean economy has nearly approached that of being tenth in the world economy. Especially, the period from 1987 to 1997 is an important period for us to recall. This is because the achievement of growth due to the development of the economy and the increase of the wages of the labour force ?we can call it growing together - was realized in those times. But before 1987 and after 1997 the relation between these factors was so bad. If we can consider this situation, we can describe the former period as one of advanced growth and the latter period as one of backward growth. Through this way of thinking, people were able to understand the meaning of the idea of 'economic growth'.
