The three-dimensional quasi-geostrophic flow model has been widely used to study basic mechanisms in oceanic flows and climate dynamics. From the mathematical point of view, twodimensional quasi-geostrophic equation (surface quasi-geostrophic equation) is strongly studied by many authors due to the similarity with three dimensional Euler equations. We survey the derivation of the three dimensional quasi-geostrophic equation. Then we discuss the global (in time) existence of the smooth solutions to the three dimensional quasi-geostrophic equation with trivial boundary data.
