Previous studies have shown that Korean speakers have not reached native-like vowel duration contrast before voiced and voiceless stops. Given that, the primary goal of present study is to check whether more experienced Korean learners of English show so-called voicing-induced vowel length differences found for native speakers of English (de Jong 2004). Another purpose is to explore whether/how they replicate stress-induced and focus-induced vowel duration differences like native speakers of English. Interestingly, the results first exhibited voicing-induced vowel length effect that vowels were significantly longer before voiced than before voiceless stops. Second, we found that greater stresses like primary and secondary stresses increased the size of voicing-induced vowel duration differences like native speakers of English. Third, unlike our expectation, it was found that lexical focus decreased the size of vowel duration. Lastly, the results showed that greater stresses increased F1s and lowered F2s, while lexical focus did not affect the quality of vowels preceding voiced and voiceless stops. These results suggest that experienced Korean learners of English can reach native-like vowel length differences to some extent, which is a major phonetic cue for voicing contrast in English and their production of voicing-induced vowel duration contrast can be affected by other prosodic elements like stresses and linguistic focus like native speakers of English.
