Chosun Ilbo, Korea’s oldest newspaper, was established March 1, 1920. Chosun Ilbo’s founder was Daejongchinmokhoe(대정친목회), the largest pro-Japanese organization of those days. They managed Chosun Ilbo approximately one year. Chosun Ilbo was placed under two suspensions of publication and confiscated 23 times. In Korea the confiscation and suspension of newspapers were recognized as Japanese oppression in those days. Further, they are connected to resistance to Japanese imperialism. That is to say, this gave rise to the paradox that the largest pro-Japanese organization published the most resistant newspaper to Japanese imperialism.
The inapprehensible attention of Chosun Ilbo was originated from its financial problems immediately after its foundation. A small amount of investment was collected contrary to its expectation when it first started. It was difficult to win a contract of advertisement and to collect subscriptions. Although Chosun Ilbo claimed to be neutral in the situation that the passion for independence increased after the 1919 3·1(March 1st) Independence Movement, it had the inherent limitation that it was published by the pro-Japanese organization. Chosun Ilbo was not ingeniously edited, compared to its rival Donga Ilbo. Above all things, Chosun Ilbo did not know the situation that subscribers thirsted for the passion for independence and for a new trend. Donga Ilbo acceded to its subscribers’ demands sidestepping skillfully the standard of censorship by the police. Chosun Ilbo attempted to resolve the financial crisis and to appeal its subscribers; so, they participated in ‘anti-Japanese’ activities too late. However, Chosun Ilbo lacked in its ability to suggest an agenda or to take the advantageous position for gaining subscribers; it was busy trying to follow Donga Ilbo. So, Chosun Ilbo’s put considerably radical articles compared to Donga Ilbo and was greatly checked by the Japanese Government of General of Chosun.
The Japanese Government of General of Chosun tried to pull Chosun Ilbo’s punches on the ground that it was founded by Daejongchinmokhoe. Although Chosun Ilbo’s attempt was a business strategy, the level of its anti-Japanese articles was considerably high. The government general summoned the board of directors of Chosun Ilbo and forced it to give up its rights of management. So, Daejeongsilupchinmokhoe(대정실업친목회), which was in charge of managing Chosun Ilbo in Daejongchinmokhoe, transferred its rights to Moon-Whan Yoo, one of its members. The rights of publication of Chosun Ilbo was transferred to Byeong-Joon Song, a pro-Japanese collaborator, April 1921. Chosun Ilbo, filled with ‘anti-Japanese’ articles which did not fit to its identity, was renovated September 1924; and therefore, it acquired the reality of its resistance to Japan.
