The actual status of inheritance of a family estate, marriage, and adoption is quantitatively summarized and reviewed in this paper. Mitsui, a large merchant family in recent times, is the target of discussion.
As a result, it was confirmed that characteristics of Japan also appear in the case of Mitsui, including that only a firstborn son inherits the family estate, the control of paternal kin is weak at the time of marriage and non-kin is acceptable for adoption. It was also confirmed that inheritance of the family estate and marriage occur within the kin in many cases, as pointed out in existing studies of Mitsui as the overall trend.
At the same time, the proportion by the degree of kinship was revealed on adopted children who inherit the family estate and marriage partners. In addition, the facts about not only members who stay in the household but also members who leave the household were also clarified.
