Electricity has been the foundation of economic growth, and constitutes one of the vital infra-structural inputs in socio-economic development. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the claim that increasing electricity consumption crisis may erode the economic growth. This note attempts to ascertain whether there is a systematic relationship between electricity consumption and economic growth. To this end, we use a large set of data covering 88 countries during the period 1975-2004. The results show that even though a statistically significant inverted U-shaped relationship between per capita consumption of electricity and per capita income is detected, the level of per capita income calculated at peak point of per capita electricity consumption is 61,381 in 2000 constant international dollars using purchasing power parity that is much higher than per capita income of all countries in the world. Moreover, we divide the sample into the OECD countries and the non-OECD countries, and the developed countries and the developing countries to analyze them separately. The separate estimation make is concluded that there is a statistically significant inverted U-shaped relationship and the peak income is higher than the average per capita income in the OECD countries and the developing countries are found while not in the non-OECD countries and the developing countries.
