Electricity is important to manufacturing firms because industrial electricity is used for a variety of purposes as one of the most essential inputs in the production process. This paper attempts to estimate the economic value of electricity in the Korean manufacturing industry by employing the concept of the value of marginal product (VMP). We used the data gathered from a 2011 survey of 732 manufacturing firms and consider two types of production functions: the Cobb-Douglas and trans-log functions. The specification test indicated that the trans-log function was more appropriate for estimating the data. The industry-wide output elasticity and VMP of industrial electricity use were estimated to be 0.1279 and KRW 239 (USD 0.22) per kWh, respectively. Given that the average price of industrial electricity use was KRW 76.6 per kWh in 2010, the computed VMP is about three times larger than the price. Therefore, the electricity provides much more benefits than the price in manufacturing industry. The results have useful implications for various areas of industrial electricity management. For example, these include a cost-benefit analysis of new projects providing industrial electricity and making pricing policy of industrial electricity.
